I removed the "chat widget", since I found that the large white window was very annoying, and it was silly to use in a website.

Was a novel idea, but redundant, since that was why we had vent.

Considering that the average player is running the game in full screen-mode, on a single monitor, and that they are so focused that they don't notice game chat (re: if you have combat logging enabled, you are seeing all the damage announcements), game chat then becomes ineffective as a contact source.

Vent enables a voice injection, that can run in the background, and is therefore unobtrusive, to game play.

Web-chat implies by default a second monitor to watch, which is silly.

All true plus no one was really using it either so it was a waste of space.

Agreed, I thought there might be some value to it, until I came to the conclusion that probably no one would see it. Perhaps if their were an audible there may have been a slight difference, however it is not an efficient way to communicate considering that a web-site is for reading, and then writing a response.

So, it was counter-productive.

As I see it, depending on your style of play, how you have configured your chat window and how many focal-points you monitor will directly affect where your attention is directed. Since, by and large we are playing a game, we are visually focused, and whatever background noise we have enabled (booms, screams and whatnot) are merely background noise.

An audible interrupt is the only feasible solution, ergo vent.
